Learning Evolution and the Nature of Science Using Digital Organisms
Date: Wednesday, November 28Time: 8am-12pm
Cost: $50
This workshop introduces new educational software that allows students to observe evolutionary processes and to perform experiments to test evolutionary hypotheses. Avida-ED is an artificial life environment of evolving digital organisms that allows an inquiry-based approach to learning not only evolutionary concepts but also evidence-based reasoning. Avida-ED is the result of three years of software development and classroom testing under an NSF grant. Participants will get an introduction to experimental evolution and hands-on experience using the software. They will receive a copy of Avida-ED (Mac or PC) and sample exercises. The software and curricula are designed for undergraduate or honors level high school courses.
